Working with a friend on a 87 camaro. Is long distance nightmare build, but anyhow they ended up with these heads on a 350 TPI that is swaped into where the 305 TPI was. I am told that these heads are the same thing. Is that true?

Does anyone know the application of these heads?, and the chamber cc's

I think they are 64cc. Which would mean I have about 9.5 to 1 compression with the 350 and Sealed Power Forged flat top pistons. Yes?

The 350 seems to ping pretty bad with the 305 injection and ECM (including stock PROM) I have just told them to make sure and put the 305 knock sensor back in so at least the 305 ECM will have that signal back (I understand they are different from 305 to 350). And I also suggested some good grade fuel and an adjustable pressure regulator.

Any other ideas?

They are probably different heads. They may share very common characteristics, but there will be differences. Not sure about the 191 heads, but the 193 castings are the 350 TBI heads. They are amongst the worst possible heads for anything performance related. This funny little ramp-like design is supposed to enhance the swirling at the expense of top end flow. The top end really means anything above about 3000 rpm.

As for the pinging, try backing off the timing a bit.

They are the ultimate trash. I'd be real surprised if a 350 with those heads, could make as much power as a factory 305 TPI. More torque, most likely, being more inches; but the horsepower peak will be lower, and at a lower RPM. Much lower. Even lower than where TPI usually craters.

If there's any one part of an engine that determines its maximum potential, it's the heads. It is altogether impossible to "compensate" for poor heads.

Throw them in the garbage, and get the right heads. Casting number will end in 083.

Thank you, more questions
That is what I feared. I have worked mostly with the Ford engines (sorry did I say that out loud?) and have a pretty good feel there. But my part numbers in the Chevy department are not so good.

This engine is going to used as a mild twin turbo engine and was supposed to have less then 9 to 1 compression. The flat top pistons were not supposed to be used if 64 cc heads were installed. That is already done.

The question is then, is there a reasonable OE head with a 76cc chamber I would be able to put on here to reduce the compression and flow a little better than this TBI truck head? They would not have to be center bolt valve cover heads.

Are the ports that bad in the old smogger 350 heads with the 76cc chambers and 1.94/1.50 valves? Do the TPI intakes have the extra angle on the center intake bolts like the TBI engines?

Thank you for your help, even if I happen to drive a Ford on most days.

This is my ride

I had a 350TBI motor in my GTA. Along with a crappy cam at 185/194 duration @.050" with about .388, and .390 lift.

DO NOT get these heads. They are terrible. I bought my car with a blown engine. Stupid me ordered a long block through a company called S&S engines. The engine they were selling matched the engine digit in the VIN# so I bought it. I should have checked up on casting numbers, would have saved me some pain.

With that I pulled a 15.3 @ 87mph. Slower than a SD LB9/5spd, but right around what a MAF LB9/5spd would do.

It sucks, don't ever get these heads, not even if they are ported.

I am now happily running the combo in my signature.

I SUPPOSE if you could find some of the earlier 882 castings, then that would be ok....kind of....sort of...well, yea, I wouldn't as they suck. IIRC, there were 2 versions. There was a lightweight and a heavy duty. The lightweights were poor poor poor all around. Thin walls in critical areas, prone to cracks, even more so with porting...you get the idea. Then there are the HD castings which I believe actually take to porting a little better, but don't quote me on that. Either way, they're still smogger heads. But yes, they do have the 76cc chambers.

624 heads also have the large smogger 76cc chambers.

882s, 624s, and 993s suck. Stay away from those.

The best ones to get for that are the 441 or 441X, and 487.

Not everybody thinks these are trash heads. do a search on "swirl port heads". Also check the posts from " fast355" about these heads.ttp://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/tbi/283217-garage-ported-193-s.html
