Axle/Gears: 9 Bolt 3:27

Can someone tell me y I got shocked?

I went to time my car hte other day and I disconnected the est and started the car. I attached the + and - on the timing light and attached the wire to the 1st plug wire. I then turned the light on and it said car was running at 4* so i put my hand on the distributer and wham. I dropped the light on my nice fender and sat down looking into space. What could have acused this? Faulty Cap?
