code 34 and 54
code 34 and 54
Hey guys,
Hoping for some advice on the codes that I am getting. Last week I was getting a code 34 and the car was idling really crappy. This happened really suddenly so I thought it must be a burned wire or loose hose. Well I disconnected the MAF to check that and it still ran crappy. It ended up being a vacuum hose off the emissions cannister. I plugged that back in and it fixed the idle problem.
During this time it had been hard to start, really dry start that takes three to four turns of the key to get it to go. On the weekend I unplugged the positive lead from the battery and left it to clear the code 34 that was happening the week before.
Turned it over and got same hard starting issue and still see the SES light. Checking for codes I have the same 34 and now 54.
Could this be the relays or should I be looking somewhere else for this one??
thanks
Scott

I played around with it tonight and still it is throwing codes, not consistent. 54 is pretty consistent and when I checked the harness that is plugged into the fuel pump relay I noticed that there is no wire for "d". I checked on my 89 Trans am and it had one. This car is an 87 Iroc only difference being it is a 350 and the Trans Am is a 305. I checked the wiring and it does not look like the wire for d simply fell off as there is not one in the harness. The other issue is that I played with it and then left it right where it was and now my code went from 34 to 33. It is like the MAF is not even hooked up. It was throwing 34 for the last little while.
The car is an 87 TPI 350 Iroc with Auto. Pretty much stock under the hood other than some bolt ons.
Any ideas. I have some time tomorrow to try to get it right and I have 2 big cruises the next two weekends to end the year.
thanks

Anybody got anything for this one.
Steps I have tried.
Unplug the MAF - no change in performance
tap on MAF with screwdriver- no stumble or change to idle.
checked connections on MAF relays, MAF burn off relay, Fuel Pump relays
checked for other loose connections and vacuum leaks
checked all fuses in fuse panel
Where else to go here.
thanks

If you are looking the fuel pump relay correctly you shold have an tan/white wire at pin "A" (fuel pump wire), black/white wire at pin "B" (ground), dark green/white wire at pin "C" (ECM signal), orange wire at pin "D"( goes to pin "G" of ALDL) and a orange wire at pin "E"(power wire from 20 amp fuse). Not having that wire at pin "D" could possibly give you that code 54 for low voltage to the fuel pump.
That's my thinking as well, just confused as to why I didn't pull the code sooner. It is not like the wire pulled out of the harness or something, it is just not there. Will need to route through all the wires and see if I can find it in there someplace.
