What is wrong with my gas gauge needle?

Hey all. I have a 1991 Camaro Z28 with a 350 tpi engine. Several months ago, I gassed up at a Chevron station and their gas pump seemed to be defective because it did not stop flowing after it reached the full mark on the gas tank which resulted in gas spilling outside of the filler neck so I released the gas pump lever so gas would not keep pumping. When I slowly released the gas pump, here comes gas gushing out. Ever since then, the gas gauge needle always register beyond the "F"-about 3/16 to the right of the letter. So, what happened inside the gas tank? Did something in there get destroyed? Also, gas fumes are escaping from the gas cap lid located on the left quarter panel. Please let me know what is going on I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Have you made sure the evaporative emissions lines are still dry? It's possible they were gas-logged when the tank overfilled.

Considering your car is going on 14 years old, it may be wise to replace the gas cap if you haven't already.

it might not be anything very serious at all. when i fill mine up and then start the car, it also goes past the full mark and sticks there, but as soon as i hit a bump in the road or something it "unsticks" and goes down to where it should be. also flicking the plastic cover on the gauge a few times firmly might unstick it, ive done it that way before.

Yeah... I got a question about that.

When I open my tank to fill it, I get the "vapor rush" sound where it sounds like a bunch of pressure is either releasing or rushing in (vacuum?).

Is that normal?

thank guys

Thanks for responding guys. Oh Cadillac, I think the vapor rush is normal because your gas tank is under pressure. So whenever you unscrew the gas cap, you have to unscrew it slowly so that the vapors escape. I have unscrewed it too fast, in the past, and got a huge whiff of gas vapor giving a bad cough so I had to step away immediately to get fresh air. You'll be able to see the instructions on the gas cap, depending on the brand. Any reading this reply, please feel free to correct me because we want all members to receive accurate information. Thanks.

The Float arm on the fuel pump sending unit probably got stuck in the up position when you had the sudden fuel surge during that refueling. You might be able to free it without dropping the tank.
