160 Degree T-Stat ?

Either Tstat is stuck open or its a 160,During normal driving temp gauge shows 160, takes forever to warm up and balks and bucks untill warm.I live in WA and dont need this. Im having the dealer change it out.
I hope Im doing this right. Also...

Motor wont run on reg and knocks, needs premium, is that right? (9.5:1 CR)

305 TPI
57,000 miles

Thanks,

Don

I dont know what that engine wants for gas.. idd you used to use low octane and now it just doesnt run well? is the power still there once it warms up? why u having a dealer switch the t-stat? takes 10 minutes by yourself. any other signs of it not runnning well?

I have the same problem with my 86 TA, whenever I'm low on cash and fill it up with regular the SES light comes on almost right away, disspaears soon after I refill it with premium.

It's like who wants to drink Diet when you alrady tried the ral thing

change the therm yourself lazy boy
put the regular 195, or 180 if you desire.

your timing is probably WAY UP if it wont run on regular. lower it down if you want ot run reg.

Good call Max, I agree, 9.5:1 CR demands premium.

Lol :-o I forgot to say that the dealer will change it for free because when I test drove the T/A, I told them I would not buy the car unless he changed it, not lazy, just smart :-)

My mechanic does not like the TPI, too fussy for him, but I bought it anyway.

I always ran 87 in my 85 and now my 86, never had a knocking problem. If it has a 160 stat, someone probably sent the base timing thru the roof thinking it would go alot faster. Its probably got some carbon buildup from the low temp stat. I'd start with timing at 6, run some GM top engine cleaner (or cheap route:water mist ) through it and see if you cant clean it up some. And give it a tuneup.
