what is the object on my engine?

i am just recently becoming to know the speed density motors, and i find this new object i have never seen before, can someone tell me what it is, it is on a 91 z28 5.7Lt. it is located right behind the runners on the passenger side it is a black rectangle thing, it has three wires going to it (black, white, green) i dont have a pic right now, but if no one can tell me what it is by just describing it, then i would put a picture up, thanks for any help.
