Anyone running a 400 with centerbolt valve covered heads?
Hi,
Is anyone running a 400 SBC with 87 up centerbolt valve cover style heads? Maybe Vortech heads or World product heads. Other than the dipstick location, flexplate, and balancer, how close does your engine resemble the appearence of an L98 at a glance? What were the advantages with either Vortech or World product heads. Which head holds up to the heat better.
Thanks
Eddie

I'm running a 400, but not centerbolt heads (mine are 186s); but I can tell you from 30 years of dealing with 400s in general that it's extremely difficult to tell one of them from a 350, except for the balancer and casting number, and in the case of the early blocks, the 3 freeze plugs in the side. To any but the most determined observer, they're so close to a 350 that almost no one will notice a difference. Back in teh 70s and 80s, alot of people would buy a car and not even know that it had a 400 in it; it just seemed to run a little stronger than most of the other similar cars. This was especially true of ones that were in Caprices and Impalas.
