Fire tears through Goodyear Tire

Posted: October 12, 2004

HOLYOKE, Mass. (abc40) -- A fire heavily damages a tire shop in Holyoke and sends thick smoke billowing over the city.

Scott Cummings, the manager of the Goodyear Tire Center at the K-Mart Plaza on Route 5, says the blaze broke out yesterday afternoon as a worker was replacing a fuel pump in a customer's truck.

None of the four employees was injured, but the blaze quickly spread through all eight bays of the shop and the roof of the building.

According to fire officials, store employees tried to extinguish the fire before alerting the fire department. When firefighters arrived at the Kmart Plaza, they heard explosions and saw black smoke in the sky.

Goodyear Tire employees were transferred to a different location in Springfield today.

Ooh, I missed that one. OSHA is going to be pissed!
See the acetylene safety thread above, I added a tad on pumping gas as well. Maybe one of the mods could add this to that thread.

ya it looked pretty bad lucky no one was hurt in the fire. i know a few people that work there so i was glad all was ok for the employees. the cars inside were another story.

as for osha i dont see how that fits in.

we often do work and forget about being safe and double checking stuff, imagine us backyard mechanics working in our under house garage...... help to bring it to everyone attention you can never be to safe no matter how often we do things it only takes one lapse or unforseen mistake.

You never had to deal with the OSHA guys have you. They are a little... ummm... enthusiastic here in MA. I feel bad for the owner(s) of the shop.
Wasn't safety equip. one of Penske's gripes with K-Mart as well?
