Big Problem
Big Problem
I have a 1988 camaro iroc-z 5.0 with a 5-speed tranny. MY car has always lagged a bit in acceleration before 1500 rpm but would be just fine after that. I firgured maybe it had to do with timing. But yesterday as I drove my car like normal the idle shot up to 1400 rpm and it wont go down. It will stay at 1400 in neutral and AT ALL TIMES. When I push the pedal to the floor the RPM Needle drops almost as if the car is going to die but then it will come back up very slowly (the pedal is pushed down the whole time).
I was told by the owner he installed an ads superchip. I dunno if this is true or not but could it be a cause? Also the car will overheat if i sit in traffic for more then 10 minutes, but will do just fine regular driving. Does anyone know whats wrong and how I can fix it? --Keep in mind my idle use to always be 1400 till i put in a new idle air control and whatever else the mechanic did(possibly timing) then the it idled niceley at 700 for about a month and a 1/2 till yesterday

your high idle problem is a vacuum leak. check and make sure that all of your vacuum lines are hooked up properly, and that none of them are getting burnt through by the car.
Your overheating problem is a problem with the chip that the prior owner put in, it did not have the fan's programmed to turn on at the right time. You'll have to go to the PROM board to figure out how to make your own, you'll be very happy that you did

what kind of 5.0L are we talking about here?? TBI or TPI?? If it is a dual electric fan TPI, the primary cooling fan is controlled by the ECM. If it is a single fan TBI car, then there is just the fan switch in the passenger cylinder head. Either way, I would venture to say that the problem is a fan motor, relay, or fan switch rather then the prom.
Fan
The problem isnt with the fans cause i have my one fan on at all times. I have a manual switch for it. However the other fan is the a/c fan and only comes on when i put on the a/c. Do you think it would be possilble to somehow hook up the a/c fan to the same manual switch so i can run both fans constantly? doing this i know will stop the overheating. and as for the idel i think ill take a look at all the vacuum lines tommarrow, thanks for the help.

I think there is a tech article on the site (from the main page, www.thirdgen.org) that explains how to make both fans turn on. What temperature is your car getting to anyways? The engine is supposed to run at 210 I believe, before the fan turns on.

Check your ignition timing and other cooling system components, you shouldn't be overheating with one fan running all the time.

GET THIS! as i was driving the car to my freinds house it still had the problem ive been talking about. But after about 4 blocks the car went back to normal!!!! 700 idle and almost no hesitaion on the throttle when i floor it!! Something funny is going on and i dunno what it is, maybe something is loose? I know theres still a little tiny lag when i floor it, so there is either a leak somewhere or something is loose. Hope you guys can help me out.

Any chance of posting it somewhere where you don't have to register to see it?
The little thingy that wasnt connected is a little metal piece connected to the throttle which leads to a cable that pushes in some kind of rubber pump behind the driver side headlights. What is the purpose of this little rubber pump? cause now that its connected i fell the car running smoother and going faster!

cruise control cant rob your horsepower, even if it does it's less than 1HP. If you are satisfied that it runs smoother now, then leave it in lol.

But I dont have cruise contorl
That's what that is; it's the vacuum motor that pulls on the throttle to adjust the car speed.
Since you don't have the vocabulary to describe what you're working with (which is OK, not everybody does, we'll try to help as much as possible anyway) the best thing you can do is to find a way to post your pic. I'd suggest using Paint Shop Pro or something, crop the useless stuff out of the picture and adjust the JPEG compression to get the best quality file you can yet a small enough size to fit, and use the board's "Attach File" feature. The limit is high enough to allow a pretty good quality pic.

all around the engine bay lol, it's meticulous. Start at one corner and follow all vacuum lines (little rubber lines) back to where they go and make sure they arent worn or brittle or broken or disconnected.
