Quick question on engine block

Do the threaded holes that the head bolts bolt into lead to coolant or oil? Wanted to know because after I cleaned them a lot of crap fell down them and I wanted to flush the appropriate system.

They penetrate directly into the water jacket. Use some sort of non-hardening sealer on the threads of the bolts, and under the heads, otherwise you will have coolant leaking into the crankcase. I usually use Permatex 300 (brown gooey gook); others use PST pipe sealer, etc. DO NOT use silicone, it will tear as the parts move from expansion and contraction, and leak.

That was the answer I was hoping to hear. One more question do all the holes between the head and the block lead to the water jacket or are any of them oil?

Some of the holes lead to the crankcase for oil to return from the valve train. I can't remember how many.

Nope, the holes in the block only lead into the water jacket. The drain back holes for the oil drain into the lifter valley.

No holes go into oil. None are even blind. All 17 on each side go into water.

My apologies. I must have been thinking of something else. Like was said, the oil returns empty into the lifter valley.
