How do you know if a fuseable link is bad?

Do they actually break in two when they go bad? Can you tell by looking at them?

I beleive they do break in two when tripped.
The only difference between a fusible link and a shorty type is the amount of time it takes to blow them. If in doubt, just replace it anyway to see if it fixes your problem

It probably won't break in two but you should be able to stretch it because the inner wire will be broke.
