Drivers side dipstick oil pan in 3rd gen
My new crate motor is based on the older block design that has a driver side dipstick.
I noticed on the first attempt to put the
motor in, the oil pan is very close to the
major frame cross member. Was also thinking
of clearance for the Y-pipe that runs between
that cross member and the oil pan sump. Headers and ypipe are TES. Anyone have problems with either of these two? Must be lots of swaps with this combination.......

Just installed a 1975 400ci small bock in a 1987 Trans Am using the original 400 oil pan (block-mounted driver's side dipstick) versus the origianl passenger-side pan-mounted dpistick.
No problems to report using aftermarket headers and y-pipe. The pan must be VERY similar to the original 350 pan than cam with the car becuase the y-pipe fits between the front of the pan and the rear of the crossmeneber like it was built for the car from the factory!
I think Bill86Z has it right. The only way you'll have a problem is if you try to reuse the factory "above the exh ports" manifolds. Then the block-mounted dipstick will have problems clearing the manifold. But with headers.... not an issue.

Thanks guys, I think I'll do a quick fit-up
of the headers + y-pipe on the motor before I
drop it in.

agree with everyone, sucks with stock manifolds, but with headers....all is clear
