radiator overheat

well i just bought a 1984 trans am with a 305 motor with 4 bbl carb. and on the way home the car overheated and stopped on me. evidently the temp gauge isnt working. apon further inspection i found a hose coming off the radiator that had been cut and capped off but i cant find where it goes. its not the hose for the overflow tank i found that one. its larger than that hose but smaller than the hose on the lower end of the radiator. the hose that is capped off is near the top of the radiator near the radiator cap. what could be the min and max of the damage caused by this occurence? thanks for any help

It might be to the heater core in the firewall. Check for any nipples on the firewall that the hose diameter might fit on. I bought a 80 Malibu once that had a shut off valve put in the heater core hose by the previous owner. Man was it cold in there until I saw the damn thing. The car was from R-Kansas and I guess he didn't need the heater that much.
