my 89 automatic rs is having some difficulty lately. about 20% of the time, she doesnt start, feels like the battery is dead. but the battery is fine, its been tested along with the alternator. has anybody had this problem or know what the deal with it is? jump starting it does work. any responses would be great. thanks a lot.

sounds like a bad connection, power or ground.

I just had the same problem. I checked everything I could think of, starter, battery, solenoid, battery cables. I had some wear in the ignition switch and after I replaced it the car started right up. My vatts system was working properly, but the key cylinder itself was worn.
The problem was an occasional thing until last week when it would not start at all. The car would jump start before it died completely, but you didn't have to let the battery charge at all just touch the cables to the battery and it would start.
I would check my connections and get the starter checked out. I was getting power to everything in the battery cables, but the car would not respond at all with the key in the start position.
The key cylinder cost about $40.00. You will have to get a key made which is about $20.00. You will also have to have a tool to remove the steering wheel and another tool to remove part of the steering column.
You don't have an airbag, so it won't be as big of a pain to change.
Check everything else first, but this was one of my last resorts before I ran out of ideas. I almost thought I would have to let someone else work on my car. If you need some info drop me an email.
