rs vs z28
rs vs z28
ia ma looking at buying a 91-92 camaro, and i see alot of rs's. i was just wondering what the main differances between the rs and the z28. are they slow? and how easy can they be made fast?

I really think that the rs looks better (and the guys at school). When my cousin had my car he said he had raced a lot of z28s and never lost, but in all fairness they where probably stock. I fell that chevy screwed up in 91-2 because the rs 305 was just behind (tenths) the z28 305. just my opinion.

I could swear the 91 and 92 RS's and Z28 looks the same? I have a 92 RS, my Sis has a 92 Z28. Her car is a bit different (and better looking) because the Z28's got the big spolier and the power bulge hood. we have the exact same ground effects, nose, and rear bumper.
I dont know about "tenths" of a second behind. As far as i know, the RS's had TBI 305 motors in them and they were pretty slow. Maybe 16 flat or late 15's at most in the quarter. Some moderatly modified v6's camaros can take those 305 TBI's on. The Z28 on the other hand has a huge advantage in HP, Torque and gearing. I've seen stock 305 Z28's hit late 14's.

Well.. There's a major flaw with the packages that you can get with third gen camaros...
They seem to have NOTHING to do with the engine that's inside of them. It's quite frustrating! The Rally Sport came with a v6, or the 305tbi. (maybe the tpi too?) The Z28's came with a 305 tbi, 305 tpi, and a 350 tpi. Same with the IROC's, the supposed "trump card" of the third gen Camaro line up.
As far as looks go, Rally Sports and Z's look identical with the exception of the fake vents on the hood. I really don't get what the heck those things were ever designed for. There may also be a difference in the rims but I can't think of it right now.
Oh yes, they did change the badge from RS to Z28. <g>

I have an RS and they're slow. A Z28 with the 305TPI will do circles around an RS. (Both in stock form).
RS 305TBI-170bhp.
Z28 305TPI-205bhp.
Z28 350TPI-235bhp.
That's not including the upgraded suspension that the Z28 has. I'm sure the Motor Trend times are due to traction problems with the Z28. Just like the 1998-2001 Z28s will outrun an SS in the 1/4 mile. The SS has 315-320bhp. The Z only has 305-310 (they upped it thru those yrs.) The SS can't hook up. But I guarantee that an SS would win in a road course due to the suspension upgrades.
And no there is no diff in the rims. Unless you got the 15" rims on the RS.

Yeah, well of course the tpi would run in circles around the tbi. But that doesn't have much to do with the RS of Z. Z's came with 305 tbi's in them with 170bhp as well.
I've got an 89 IROC-Z with a 305 tbi, and my friend has a BASE MODEL (!!!!) Firebird with the same engine!
That's a waste of a performance package imo.

The Z got better suspention than the rs and I have never seen a 4 wheel disk brake rs.

91-92 Z28's didnt come with TBI, only TPI. I gaurantee that a stock Z28 will outrun a stock RS. It clearly has the power advantage. Whats more, if it's that 230 HP version Z28 305, its got 3.42 gears out back and that'll kill an RS and the 205 HP Z28.

I dont think RS's came with TPI. They either got the 2.8 MPFI or the 305TBI and 91-92 they had the 3.1 (MPFI?). I am not sure but I think the 92 Heritage Camaro was an RS with a 350TBI or TPI (not really sure at all). Now a Z could have anything from an LG4, TBI305, TPI305, but I think only IROC's got the 350TPI's. GM switched engines so much I cant remember any more. Now I can tell ya every engine available for firebirds, though...

Ward, maybe you have never heard of the B4C RS.... you know those little RS'es that came with a G92 packaged 305TPI/5spd (high 13 second car stock!) or a 350TPI/auto.
The 85-90 Irocs were avaliable with everything from an LG4 to a L98, possible engine options changed over the years. 1987 was the last year for carbs, and I beleive the LO3 was first introduced in 87 to the Fbody line.
The LO3 cars will get smacked around by the LB9's like the LO3 was it's favorate jail B1TCH. A non G92 305/auto in 91-92 should run low 15's all day long. A G92 car should run high 13's, maybe low 14's depending on the driver. The LO3 runs high 16's to low 17's.
The Z28 was a better overall performer, a stiffer suspension, better brakes, better engine options. The Z28 I beleive had a ride hieght of about an inch lower than that of an RS.
if you plan on radically mod'ing the car, get an RS. Cheaper purchase price, cheaper insurance rates, and they aren't hard to find! (no body else wants them) They make a great car to put a 383 carb'ed small block in like Chuck Everly did with his 91 (the only car that I have ever heard of keeping up with a Harley in some twisty roads!) The engine harness is simple compared to that of a TPI car, and a 5spd Z28 might get a price twice that of a 5spd V8 RS. Chances are, if you plan on heavily mod'ing the car, you will be doing new rear gears, and SLP sells posi units real cheap (under $100 last I heard), so why not? Or you could just get a complete Z28 rear out of a junkyard if you really want 4 wheel disc.
If you just want to do little simple bolt on mods, looks for a Z28.
