well, you really should be able to kill a 4 banger pretty easily stock. Try a tune-up first heh. Some things that you may want to do though, are things that you can use when you switch to the new block. new rear gears, full exhaust, ignition (though the stock one is good to streetable powers I believe?), if you're going to keep FI then get a LT1 intake (cuz it can be swapped over).
You should get a 350 short block since they're about a dime a dozen in junkyards lol.
If you have an automatic right now then doing a T56 swap will be a little harder, but not impossible or even "THAT" hard.. if you know how to drive a stick, and have the money to do it, go for it.
Rear gears I'd probably get 3.73s if you want it to be daily driven probably?

No problem with being a noob. Something every noob should know about is the "search" function. Needless to say, your questions aren't new.
Start off with a search. You are going to find all kinds of info about engine buildups, etc., etc. You might want to check out some of the 383 buildups.
Now the only question is: How much do you want to spend?
Back in the good old days, the statement was: you can't beat cubic inches.
These days, you can't beat cubic money.

The bigger the engine, the more power it will make. Start by upgrading the exhaust and adding headers. This will wake up the motor now, and won't choke the new engine.
