Rocker Arm Question...

Okay, so I am trying to get all the finishing touches and final pieces figured out and ordered for my engine...

I heard that the Rocker Arm Studs that come on the AFR heads are prone to breaking, so I am just going to upgrade them now so I don't have to worry about it or face problems related to them down the road.

I also heard that I can get 7/16" studs for added valve train stability, so I am probably gonna go that route, since I haven't got my rocker arms yet, and the price is the same for 3/8" or 7/16".

So my question is... what length do I need? I keep seeing different lengths and such. I am planning on running Comp Pro Magnum roller rocker arms, so which studs do I need, I am going to be buying ARP studs, does anyone know the p/n? Are there any issues or anything with going to the 7/16" studs?

I tried searching, but I couldn't really find anything related to my questions.

Pushrod length checker. Everything else is guesswork.

Obviously your rockers will need to be for 7/16" studs.. if you have rockers for 3/8" studs, there might be a little play.

Your pushrod length [that you already measured before] won't change, so you won't need your pushrod length checker [again]. You just need to get a stud that won't allow the nut (or poly-lock in this case) to bottom out before you get you your valve lash spec.

I went w/ the COMP Pro Mag 1.6s for 7/16" studs, and run the ARP 7/16" studs...

Length checker will let you know what length pushrod, but more than likely its gonna be stock length still. My heads are slightly milled and the block is decked .025" and I still run the 7.2s after checking w/ the checker.

Also, depending on what style rocker, non self aligning or self alignging, you will need guideplate for the NSA ones...

I think the AFR heads have guideplates on them already, so you'd need non-self-aligning rockers

I misnamed this thread, the real question in all this is... what Rocker Arm Studs do I need... what length studs...

I am going to figure out the push rods and everything once I get this engine going together. I already have guide plates with my heads, I was just wondering about upgrading to 7/16" rocker arm studs, instead of the 3/8" studs that are in the heads already.

So again, is there anything else I need to change if I upgrade Rocker Arm Studs to 7/16"? (I am clear I will need 7/16" rockers then, that's no problem)

If he runs guideplates then yes he needs NSA rockers. If he doesn't run guideplates then no, he does not need NSA. IF you run Self Aligning rockers w/ guideplates, then you have two separate setups trying to keep the pushrods in the right spot, and you WILL more than likely end up w/ the pushrod hitting the guideplate...
