This seems to only happen when it is cooler, but have had it happen lately as well.

Sometimes when I try to start my 85 Bird it doesnt let the starter go when I release the key. If the engine starts there doesnt seem to be an issue, it is only when it doesnt want to kick over. I release the key and it keeps trying to turn over, seems like a bit slower like its not getting full power but still tries. I pulled the started and had it checked, was ok...but not sure if they checked the 'bendix' (sp) or just that it would try to crank. Replaced ignition switch, both the electrical and the mechanical. The key drops back like it should when you release, but just keeps going.

My guess is the starter, which I'm not wanting to pull back out if I dont have to but only other thing I can think of.

I do have an after market alarm, but that looks to be hooked in series with the ignition and doesnt look like that could cuase this, but I need to get some wiring diagrams of it first.

Change your starter, I had the same problem with my 87 Iroc....I just had the motor built and was going to crank it one turn over so I could pull out the dist. to prime the oil system and it just kept cranking...and cranking...I went through 3 starters before I got one that didnt hang up.....so I would look there...all of mine checked out fine too until I put them in....replace it
