More power when cold?
Hi..
A friend of mine have a problem with his GTA -88 any guess whats causing it?
* When the car is cold it has much more power at upper rpms than when its warm.
* If you drive rughly for about 30 min the car feels strong even when its warm. But next day its the same thing again.
Thanks/N.

Re: More power when cold?
Your friend is stupid. Of course when its cold its going to get more power. Cold air is more dense thus allowing more 02 molecules per cfm dealing out a bigger combustion in the process.

Re: More power when cold?
dont you know we live in the PC era? you cant call someone stupid, you have to do it in a round about way that they think about the question they asked and come to the conclusion themselves....dick move dude.
In any case to the OP; the car will have more power when cold but at operating temp it might not, youre shoving denser air in and packing the cylinders better, depending on where you live id suggest putting a different thermostat in or doing a ram air intake, just a note though ram air sucks with water, so its a bad idea if it rains alot, and swapping the thermostat might be bad too for him based on your location, prime example when i was in az i used a 180* t-stat, perfect for cooling and way under factory temps, but now im in WA and it just ran too cold, kept switching between open and closed loop cuz the ecm couldnt make up its mind
hope that helps

Re: More power when cold?

stupid is as stupid does
tell your friend he needs to install a hot air intake

but yea really thats pretty much a givin in the H.P. world, thats why people got fans and all kinds of junk blowing on their engines at the strip between runs

Wish my engine would stay cold all the time. The world would be a much better place

Hello gta324!!
That's normal!!
All cars run better with cooler air temps, cooler air = denser charge of air/fuel into the cylinders = more power, warm air = less dense charge of air/fuel into the cylinders = less power!!

Re: More power when cold?
Guys!? What's up with this thread? Did anyone notice that after being driven for 30 minutes, the car has better power? How does that have anything to do with ambient temp? And since when do we gang up on an OP without even considering their question?
Sammy, have your freind check his Manifold Air Temp sensor and his Coolant Temp Sensor. He will likely need a scanner to do this. Especially since the MAT sensor is buried at the bottom, rear of the plenum. The CTS can be checked for resistance and I dont have the specs with me now, something like 3,400 ohms at 70 degrees, and 250 ohms at 180. Check service manual to be sure. Using a scanner to monitor datstream makes it easy. Another possiblity is Mass Airflow Sensor but not as likely from your description.
BTW, since when does a cold engine make more power? Anyone ever hear of warmup enrichment? Cold air is one thing. A cold engine never makes the power it makes when its warm. Unless there's something wrong with it.

Re: More power when cold?
Very true about the cold air/ engine thing, it was misworded and off base, from his description it sounded like a normal jump in and drive when its cold, I'm guilty of that, from what I caught iit would go and have more power, then it got crappy, and then after 30 mins it stayed consistant in performance, like after its fully warmed up until the next day it happens again which would be from sitting in the cold all night, mine does that I find it normal but that's IF he's doing that, I'm kinda curious now if that's wrong lol I might have some work to do
Oh and I think we were defending the op here from a rude statement lol doing our part in keeping the ppeace and all lol

Re: More power when cold?
Why are you even in the high rpm range when cold to begin with????
What do you mean by better? Better performance or better fuel efficiency/emissions? gotta be careful when using loose terms like that....
Whoa holy ****, the guy responded to a 9 year old thread! My bad too!
