Belt Tensioner Markings?

What does the indicator look like and where is the arrow supposed to be?

How far is too far and low is too low?

My engine is squealing and I don't know if it's the belt or the pulleys or tensioner. Don't tell me to take a heater hose and stick it to my ear because while the engine is running I can't distinguish between the loud *** engine running and the squealing. I asked this before but no one answered except to use a heater hose. I don't have a heater hose and I don't think that is the proper way to diagnose a problem.

By the way, it's an 89 Camaro V6 engine.

In your other 2 threads about this exact same thing, both myself AND RB83L69 told you to do the heater hose trick.

Go to the store and buy 2' of heater hose. Try it. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, toss it on the back seat for when you burst a heater hose. Don't shun the idea until you try it.

Oh yea, heater hose = common man's stethescope.

I don't understand. What am I supposed to hear? How can you hear anything while the engine is running?

I didn't think it could be the water pump because it's not leaking. I don't know if it's the compressor and the alternator looks new. The rest of it is just pulleys. Where do I put the stethscope at and what do I listen for?

if you purchase a mechanics stethescope you will put the end of it on the alternator and listen to the bearings in it for a squel or grind then move on to the ac compressor and do the same then on to the tensioner and so on until you find which one is the culprit its not that hard to distinguish when the engine is running with a stethescope ...you will definatly be able to tell where the problem is .....

Just because the water pump doesn't leak does not rule it out (as thegeneral got at). There are bearings that the shaft spins on. Those bearings, like any other, can go south creating that aweful squeeling. Any shaft abnormalities will also create that noise.

Like THEGENERAL said, once you go in and probe around, it isn't that hard to determine what's making the noise. Stethescope, heat hoses, they all relay the sound pretty well.

Heres a good way to find out for sure if it is (or isnt) the water pump. Take off the belt, and spin the waterpump pulley a few times by hand. If it either feels rough, or you can hear a squeal, then thats it.

Can I check the rest of the pulleys and components by spinning them and checking for roughness?

How do I take off the belt and what do I need?

You need to go to the store and buy yourself a manual for your car, along with that heater hose.

I haven't taken a belt off a serpentine setup, but from what I hear, you just need to loosen off the tensioner. Can't remember how though.

I agree with Devil... you really should get a manual. They are cheap, and will show you how to do all this stuff with pics.
