Steering column repair..................

I bought my 83 Trans Am for dirt cheap a few months ago as a theft recovery. The only damage of any real concern is to the steering column. The thieves broke the plastic away on the left side by where it meets the dash. Now,the only way to start the car is with a screwdriver. I have the keys to the car and there is no visible damage to the rest of the ignition. How hard and expensive should it be to fix the column so I can use keys like a normal person? Is this something I could do myself or should I leave this to a pro? Thanks for any help.

i put a tilt column in my 85. only a few bolts and unplug some wiring harnesses. take a look with a flash light and you should be able to see everything that has to be unbolted or unplugged.

So does this mean the only solution is to install a new column?
