My Expereinces with a CAI
MY Cold air intake really did give me power in the upper RPMs guys.
I drove it to work today at 8 in the morning and i felt a big, well not too big, but there was a difference, in the power of the upper RPM's....
Next i think i'll try some porting of my heads and intake, with a Summit TPI cam. They(summit) said with stock intake on a 305 they got 30HP gain but with a modified chip. I'll get one later but i think that'll be my next performace mods.
Should i hire someone to port my heads? if so, what should i look for, there is a place here in town that specializes in heads so.... iunno..... but i think they rebuild heads...
When you port heads, what exactly are you doing i know removing excess material, and allowing it to flow better. But like are you making some areas larger or what?
Is it even worth my time to port 305 heads, even tho the gain will be minimal, i'm just looking for things to hold em over until my $3k is large enough for a Permoance reliable engine. So it might take a while.
Are there any books i can buy about porting? Today i get paid, pick up my check around 3PM and i'll goto autozone, where i got my original hanes manual but left it in florida...

Even tho I dread posting on topics like these,
you do have some pretty Intelligent questions,
so ease up boys ..let em learn .. LOL
Do you know what a head looks like from underneath, find a pick and look where the exhaust and intake valves are ..
if you know what your looken at then you know what has to be ported.
I wouldnt go an do the heads unless you are gunna keep the 305 and supercharge it. My first car was an LB9 and it was perfect for me at the time.
Spend more money on the essentials tho
Cam, exhaust, Headers, siamesed runners, bigger throttlebody, Intake .. etc etc.
Dont listen to those Summit guys .. its prolly some 28 year old red head women reading cosmopolitian.
check out TPIS aftermarket performance .. these guys dont screw around

I have a CAI, so thats done.
Now i just need to help the air flow better. Which would be what? a cam and some porting or an entire new intake system?

If you're actually going to buy some books about car repair/performance, I'd recommend heading to an actual book store. The selection at AutoZone is limited to Haynes manuals, which are good for minor repairs but once you start getting into stuff like head porting or even internal engine work, they Haynes manual won't cut it.
I'd look at a book called Performance Chevy Small Blocks on a Budget by David Vizard. It has a lot of good information about building up SBCs, including head porting information.

as to where i can get one, will books-a-million be good enough?
I remeber the public library in florida had a vetry nice selection of books, i rented how to rebuild a small block chevy multiple times. And many other books they had were constantly out of stock.
so...
I'll check around man...

yea and your point?
what exactly are you trying to obtain with these pictures??
if u think that flashy 1980s TPI setup is something special
then reality is gunna hit you hard.
your first porting questions were worth asking ..
but what the hell does that gotta do about your title ??
wasnt it "CAI something" and your posting pics of your car and askng about porting??
d00d!!

Books-A-Million should carry all sorts of car performance books, as should Barnes & Nobles. Even if they don't have the book I mentioned, there's bound to be plenty more like. There should be a whole section devoted to automotive topics.

Consider this...if you think they gave Shane the wrong advice...consider the source. Have you read ANY of Shanes posts at all? It doesnt take much for him to get confused and confuse others. I dont want to even imagine how his conversation went with a Summit rep. Puking on Summit with a statement like that was totally unnecessary IMO.

I can't believe all the attention this guy gets. While those guys who do searches and have intelligent questions are getting much fewer replys.
Or maybe the whole trick to getting replys to a question, is to go ahead and act like a full on pea-brain.

shane, save your money
don't put cash into this 305, save it for your "reliable perfromance engine"(which by the was is an oxy-moron)
save your cash and wait. putting money into this 305 is the dumbest thing you could ever do if it runs fine

about the no more money into the 305, i was saying that so you wouldn't waste your 3 grand.
your car runs fine so don't mess with it right now, if your serious about building a performance motor then save your cash and be sure to do it right

Okay, I've been reading these threads (I'm addicted to the hilarity of replies), and I've been meaning to say ONE thing but haven't been able to because they are always locked by the time I get to read them.
I'm $*&#ing sick of hearing you end a post with "so..." like you're some kind of bad@$$ or something. I know, I know it feels cool to be 17 with a nice new V8 and want to do everything under the sun with it. My plans weren't even as much as yours and mine still aren't all done. This stuff takes a lot of money and time. Lately, I've been somewhat short on both. I have a new rear brake caliper that I have to replace and I've had the new caliper for a week already.
Just calm down and look at the situation. Focus on ONE modification at a time and don't post 30 different threads on 15 different ideas/projects when none of them are actually in the process of being completed.
All of your questions so far (except for some in the Body/Intereior section) have been asked before..

Some guys dislike books for some reason. Which is too bad, because when it comes to the type of info needed to build up chevys, you can't get by without em.
Look at how many words you find in a typical post here. Then compare that with the number of words on one page in one of David Visard's books. Plus there are technical drawings and photos. The explanations are complex on all the whys and how tos in engine building.
I've found that Visard's books are an indespensible learning tool. They're all good.
Buy each of them, and a good set of hand tools, along with a few specialized SBC tools like a balancer puller, a magnetic base dial indicator, a digital caliper, etc with the first $1000 you spend.
Then after that the questions you ask will sound like they're coming from someone who has some background, instead of someone who's spent his entire life watching South Park and playing video games.

If you read the rules sticky above, you'll see:
-Stay on-topic to each specific board/post and discuss Third Generation (1982-1992) F-Bodies (Camaros and Firebirds) only.
-Use the SEARCH function to minimize redundant threads.
-Use Private Messaging or E-Mail links instead of "paging" a member or members on the boards.
-Maintain a sense of humor and decency.
You'll also see what the mods are supposed to do if these and other rules are violated.

When I was a kid, we didn't have South Park or video games. But was the only guy on the block to have a '68 Shovelhead! I had the manual memorized, cause I'd read it every night for about 3 hrs before I hit the sack.
Off with the Teevee... Hit Those Books!
The neighbors were ready to strap me down and have me exorcized.
....Straight Pipes!
man people, you are ripping the poor guy apart. Sure he doesn't always make sense but at least he is here trying to learn (or do something). As for replying to other posts, I think he would need to learn more before he does that, so I have absolutely no problems if he only answers in his own posts. Keep in mind, he is young and he actually bought something american. That's already pretty good.
Shane, when I was in school camaro was the only car I wanted to buy and I didn't actually get one until I finished college. I am a software engineer and have 2 jobs. I still don't have enough money for what I want to do to my car. Hope that puts a few things in perspective. Btw, I don't think you'll be able to spend 3 grand on a "performance" engine, and with the engine, I wouldn't even try going with cheap parts.
I haven't been following you as closely as some of the other guys here, but if you don't have time or money to actually do something with your car (waiting for a paycheck for $30 dollar pipe), I suggest you just look at the new posts each day and see what other people are doing. It's amazing how much you'll learn about your own car that way.

reliable engine you say
check your grounds man... all the gauges going out isnt as big a problem as ONE gauge going out. Check grounds and fuses... you can find those in the HAYNE'S MANUAL
Good first use for the book heh.

my guess is a fuse went, simple and easy to fix. if not its a ground wire somewhere.
take that 3 grand you have and buy a few books, some tools, and redo things that are gonna need doing anyways.
redo the shocks and struts, put new brakes on, full tuneup, tranny fluid, rear diff fluid
then start saving a bit at a time for that engine you want

a lady crazily offered me 6 grand for my car today....
I was driving down the road soon after my guages went out and at a stop sign she said, "nice car kid, i used to have one when i was your age" and then she said how muhc you want for it, i said, hmm for me tobe happy $7 grand, she said how about $6k, i was like hmmm.....
I mean, i've seen these cars go for more around here i guess. I guess cause the roads are so hazardous around here that it seems that they are in good conditoon if they look like mine does....
But i've been thinking and i'll end up spending just as muhc as a freggin GMPP 350 HO so i think i'll buy one of those and use the vortec TPI intake manifold, and all those goodies for a while. Its a new engine right?

I'd sell my car for 6 grand if someone offered... LOL. But mine's just a rolling chassis atm... could get a 4th gen later model LT1 for 6k in decent running condition.... but I'd probably take out the engine/trans and rear and part out the rest and buy a rolling 3rd gen chassis to put parts in hahah.

yes they are new engines, i hate to say it but i find it hard to believe you were offered 6 grand for your car.
may i ask you a question, your all happy about buying a new motor, but have you realised your gonna need an engine stand, hoist, help to drop it in and many many tools that i'm sure you don't have.
its not just the motor your spending money on its all the tools, do you even have a torque wrench?
i'm not saying don't get what you want , i'm just trying to help you understand what your in for.
oh and putting in a new motor is gonna take more then a day, so your gonna need something to drive while its down

an 86 TA with the body damage you have althou minimal. not to mention the headliner and no back seat and the pvc cai you built isnt going to bring more than 2 grand in this area .
shane if you seriously had a women offer you that much money for your car well you better get your butt out to your car right now drive around until you find her again and see if she was serious if so get a check and ask for a ride home.

Since I didn't respond in time to the other threads before the big lock...
Tech content: drive the 305 until it dies, then swap in something better that you can afford...don't take money away from the spelling & dating lessons that are obviously working out so well for you
I just wanted to thank everyone who follows any thread that Shane is involved with...it is the most amusing stuff on TGO...stretching back to June of 2003...coincidentally to when he registered...
Special thanks to the moderators who dash all over the forums trying to keep up
Shane, I suggest that you NOT sell your car...it is far TOO valuable to my mental well being...
