How do I install an electric cooling fan????

I am in the process of swapping in a 350 TPI motor from an 89 Trans Am GTA into my 84 Sport Coupe that had the 305 Carbed LG4. The old motor had a belt-driven cooling fan. I took an electric cooling fan from an 85 IROC 5.0 TPI. I have a Painless Wiring Harness for 90-92 TPI motors (I am converting it to Speed Density). The harness does not have a connector for an electric cooling fan. My question is, how can I install this/hook it up electrically? Thanks in advance.

Get a fan relay. run a wire from the battery junction, to the relay, then to the + wire on the fan. Hook the + triggering wire on the relay to a source that comes on when the key is on, and ground the other one. Also ground the other wire from the fan. The fan should now come on whenever the key is turned on

Don't listen to Jester... he keeps blowing relays!

Autozone or equivalent will have a 30amp relay. IIRC:

30- battery 12V
87- to the fan pos wire
85- goes to a switched 12V source and doesn't need a lot of current
86- ground

Both 30 and 87 should be about 16 gauge wires and some people run a fuse between the 87 post and the fan. If you have dual fans like me, I run two separate relays (in case I pull a Jester and fry one) with one on all the time and the other is wired to the defroster (which never worked) switch.

Actually, i think you'd want #87A instead of #87 for the fan's positive wire... but yeah, use a relay...

I think I would rather have it be controlled by the thermostat, though. Doesn't the engine need a warm-up period? Thanks.
