shift linkage cable help

About 3 weeks ago, the shift linkage cable broke, leaving me with the shifter that just slid, so we replaced it with one from autozone, identical cable, installed fine. Now, out of no where, it won't go into park, when i throw the shifter up all the way it goes in reverse. We took a look at it today and it almost seems like the cable is too short now, and won't reach. we took a hammer and banged on some bracket now if you play with it abit itll just barely get into park. I've tried searching, found a few posts about it but no one really said how they fixed it, or what they adjusted, etc, so I figured i'd throw it out there again, any help appreciated.

start with this its a quote from another post on this problem

pull up the console and check there. The cable has a rubber ring that mounts on the metal plate near the shifter. My tranny wouldnt shift into park and it was because the rubber had come out. I think you can also adjust the placement of the actual shifter which would adjust the shift cable position on the tranny. There should be a couple of bolts that you can loosen and move the shifter a little.
if that doesnt fix it check to see that the cable isnt broken underneath the car where the rubber accordian style boot is pull it back and look at it to make sure the plastic isnt broken under there ...

hit the button and punch "adjust shifter cable" in the box and hit enter it brings up alot of threads about this problem

I replaced my shift cable about a month ago and it works fine. However, it was tricky to get the top end of the cable to clip into the metal bracket inside the shifter console. The first couple times I test shifted it before I re-assembled the console the outside of the cable would pop-out where it snaps into that bracket when I would shift gears going back into Park. I was finally able to get it snapped in securely and have no further problems. I thought maybe the same thing is happening for you because I experienced the same symptoms as you are having. The cable I bought would be the same exact part as you bought for your car. The part number for mine is CA 1110. I hope this helps.

I also purchased my new cable from autozone for my 87 Iroc
it done the same thing it kept jumping out of the bracket under the shifter plate. I returned it to autozone they gave me a refund
and said they have had a lot of problems with this model cable
went to GM purchased a new one not one problem since.
