Question about fuel pump noise. (and the sound it makes)
My car still has a lot of hesitation, and is really down on torque
, so I think my fuel pump may be going bad...
[EDIT]:Forgot to mention, I get a code 44 every now and then... thought it was water in that tank that did it, but I just just new gas in it today and it still does it, which is what leads me to fuel pump.
(I've done a tune-up) I can't test it myself cause I don't have a pressure gage, but I was wondering if I would tell by the noise it makes.
When I first turn the key to 'on' I can hear it come on... very loud. If it were an engine, it would be going from high RPM to low RPM then turn off (only way I can describe it so you can understand). Then I start the car, and I can still hear it running (from outside the car).
Could this be an indication of a fuel pump going bad, and the reason why my car is so damn slow?
Throw me a bone here.

Xeno,
Unfortunately, there is no way to determine the performance of an electric fuel pump from the sound. I've heard brand new ones that whine like a turbine and some that just buzz lowly. You really need to test the pressure with a gauge. The Schrader valve is the same size used for refrigeration service valves, if that gives you any ideas.

Also, one more question for you Vader (or anyone else), at the back top of the engine (way back, top top.. behind intake to the right of the distributor) Right in the middle is a little nut (type thing) if you unscrew it there is a valve like you see on bicycle tubes (the kid where you press the center in an let out the air) What is this, and does not having a cap on it matter? Because I'm missing the cap.
Thanks for the help, I still think bringing it to Pep-Boys or a local mechanic is what this thing really neads.

lol, looks like I answered my own question... how cool is that... I was under the impression that the valve was on the fuel rail assembly... guess not...
Ok, time to ask another question that totally doesn't partain to the orginal topic... That valve, should it do something when I press in on it? Cause it doens't, and it doesn't feel like it's building up pressure when I just press my finger over it...

About the fuel pump prob. My fuel pump went out on me last week. The one in the car sounded "weak" when I'd turn the key. Now with the new one in there, it sounds louder, and sometimes I can hear it for a second when I turn the car off. I don't know if the sound is any indicator that it might need to be replaced soon. It just crapped out on me at Walmart. Just hope it doesn't go out on you if your in the middle of nowhere...
Xeno: it should spray gas all over you if you push the ball down with a screwdriver or something. I don't think your finger can get enough force to move the ball.
Why not rent a fuel pressure gauge to test it out? An auto parts store may even loan you the tool for the day.
