Do I really need one? How easy is it to program one myself? How much does an already programmed one go for?

86,

Your otherwise stock 305 TPI will react to the 180°F thermostat very well with the stock PROM. (Incidentally, Programmable Read Only Memeory module is not copyrighted, but a public domain acronym.) Any thermostat colder than that might start causing problems, since there are some programmed coolant temperature dependent parameters that have a threshold temperature of 176°F. The 180°F selection is a safe bet and good compromise year round.

As long as we're on the topic, if your TPI still has the stock PROM, you might want to check the TSBs from GM on the problems associated with it. There was a PROM re-write in November of 1986 that addressed some drivability and performance issues. I replaced mine with the upgrade and it performs better than it did with the Hypertech PROM I had installed (and removed) previously.
