Got my head casting number

Ok, so everyone that read my post about converting toi a carb that replied, I pulled the drivers side valve cover today and got the head casting number. Per Mortec's site the number reveals this.

14014416...80-86...305..........1.84"/1.5" valves, 58cc chambers

Not sure if these are the good heads or bad. Still trying to find the block casting numbers but I dont see how they will tell me if the motor is a LG4 or the L69 because Mortecs site does specify which are which per the numbers.

Those are 416 heads, about as good as you can get, stock wise. With some bigger valves and a port job, they really can flow and be some good performance heads.

LG4 and L69 used the same block, heads, crank, and intake manifold. In some cases the rods & pistons were different, in others they were the same. In '84, LG4 had dished pistons and L69 had flat tops with valve reliefs.

You said the engine looks like a stock installation. Is the air cleaner single or dual snorkel? Is the exhaust pipe 2-1/4" or 2-3/4"? Does the tach "redline" (transition from yellow to red) start at 5000 RPMs or 5500 RPMs? Is the 8th character of the VIN an "H" or a "G"? If you answer the former in all cases, it's an LG4.

Odds are it's an LG4.

The VIN decodes it as the LG4 V8. Like I said before it only has the the single snorkel intake which would lead a person to think that it was a LG4 but I guess they could have just not used the H.O dual one, guess I will never know untill I find those block numbers which proves to be hard with the motor in the car. I do know this, when I bought the car it needed a new starter so removed it and took it up to the auto parts store and when I gave them my car's year, and engine code, etc the starter they gave me didnt match as far as the bolt hole pattern on the starter mount. I ended up getting a starter for a damn Monte Carlo within the same year.

The block casting number won't tell you, because they used the same casting number for both the LG4 and L69.

Guess I should have noticed you have a TA. The L69 would have a cowl inlet as well as the single snorkel. All of the other things I mentioned would be the same whether Camaro or 'Bird.

So tell me, why the differences in starters between the 305's as far as the bolt patterns that mount them to the block? Thanks for helping an ingnorant new GM owner.

The only relevant differance I know of would be the number of teeth on the flexplate/flywheel (168 or 153 teeth).

I know AT & MT have different listings, but all should be 153 teeth.

It could very well be that your local friendly parts store simply had the wrong part in the right box. It happens.

I just picked up a starter for mine, application '86 LG4 AT. For this particular rebuild brand, there was no difference between LG4 and L69. However, the AC Delco remanufactured listings at the same store had a different number for the LG4 and L69.

Go figure.
