I NEED TO DISARM MY AIRBAG!!!

Because I need to fix my steering colum. DOes anyone know how to do this so I don't kill myself cause I didn't do it right. Would it be better to have a dealer do it or is it simple enough for me to do it.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Take a small car, preferrably a Geo Metro or some other worthless creation, and drive it into the front of your car at speeds above 5mph.

I'm not sure how one would go about rearming it, though..

I permanently removed mine (installed a Grant security steering wheel).

1. Disconnect the battery to remove power.

2. Remove the connector (on my 1991, it was a yellow/green "security" connector that requires a plastic piece to be removed because GM wanted to be sure the SIR [air bag] electrical connections would remain connected). Be careful when removing the connector(s) that static electricity does not get into the wiring which could (I've never heard it ever happening) cause the air bag to deploy. For the same reason, be careful where you have the steering wheel sitting disconnected - just in case it should explode for some reason - remember there is an explosive charge in there that will cause great force to open the bag.

Installation is the reverse of the above.

I removed the air bag light on the dash so it will never come "on" with the engine running (I've permanently removed my air bag).

For me, it was very easy to do. If you comfortable working on the electrical system of the car (you know how to remove all the connectors in the car), it should be easy (fun? or at least satisfying) for you too.

LOL, I would do that but I just want to disarm it not make it blow out. Any other Ideas. I was just going to disconnect the battery and unplug the connector at the bas of the colum.
Thanks for the replies guys
