Which way advances/ or retards.

Which way do you turn a distributor cap to advance or retard. I thought it was counterclockwise to advance, but i don't have a timing light.

i'd buy a light before i did it. you can get them cheap at most parts stores, even cheaper at yard sales and flea markets. i have a snap on light and 2 from sears. the one from sears has the advance **** on the back and i like it the best, cost 60 dollars.
