307 - 305 cam

Hey guys
got a question for y'all, whats the difference between a cam from a 307 and one from a 305. The reason im asking is because my brother just gave me a cam from his 307. It's in pretty good shape and i was thinking of using it in my 305.

Ive got a hunch that chevy used the same cam in these two engines but im not 100% sure- so i thought id ask u guys...

thanks

Not a lot of difference, they will both suck. With how cheap a flat tappet cam is (whats in the 307) there is no way in hell that I would bother with re-using an old one.

I don't think I would re-use a flat tappet cam period. Especially if the lifters weren't matched or do not come with the cam.

oh ok. well this is my first time rebuilding an engine and I kinda figured it would be a good way to save a little money. Also its only a 305 so its not like im building a high performance racer or anything.

so if i did use an old cam in it, are you guys saying that my rebuilt engine would not last long? or run really pourly?

The story is that using an old cam with old lifters that were not originally used with that cam will cause rapid lobe wear.

The lifters and the lobes kind of "learn" each other and the wear pattern matches one of the other.

It is said that swapping a used cam from one engine to another is OK if the lifters are matched to the lobes they were on originally. I think it's a wive's tale. No two engines are alike anyway. A slight difference in alignment of the lifter bores from one engine to another could be enough to wipe a lobe.

For ~$80 you can get a cam and lifter kit from www.SummitRacing.com
