Shift Kit

Can someone explain what exactly a shift kit does and how it is installed, Also is it something that a novice mechanic like myself can tackle or something that should be done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Also how much does one usually cost around?

It is a set of modifications to the valve system and sometimes the pressure regulator in the trans, that changes the shifting characteristics. Usually they make the trans tend to shift later and harder. The reason is so that the engine can get all the wy up through its most powerful RPM range before the trans shifts. It's almost a necessity if you do anything (cam) that raises the engine's maximum power output RPM range. It also makes the trans last longer by making the clutches slip for less time during shifts; since the clutches don't wear while the trans is in a gear, only during the time it's shifting. Of course that assumes that the shock of a firm shift won't grenade something else.

It's not hard at all to install one. Anybody with just a little mechanical knowledge can do it. It's usually unpleasant because the trans drips fluid on you. About the only things to watch out for are that when you take the valve body out, the check ***** fall out and they're pretty small so they get lost easily, and it's critical that you get the gaskets in right.
