Need help w/timing. car won't start.
Need help w/timing. car won't start.
My car wouldn't start the other day because I wasn't getting any spark. The pickup coil ended up being bad. Now I have both good spark and fuel pressure(fuel is also getting injected) but it still won't start. I assume it's because I didn't put the distributor back in right and it's a timing issue. Here's what I did.
-Rotated engine with finger in #1 spark plug hole until i felt the compression. The timing mark wasn't at 0*TDC so I continued cranking until it was, which was about 1/3 a turn.
-Looked into the distributor hole and turned the oil pump shaft so it would line up with the distributor.
-Inserted the distributor so the rotor points to 5 o'clock(ei # 1 spark plug).
When I try to start it, it will sputter and cough if i retard the timing a whole bunch but won't fire up. What could be the problem? If my balancer ring has slipped causing the timing to be off, how else would I find TDC? Thanks for any suggestions. ~Arnold

180 Off, take the Dist out, spin the rotor around 180*, and try Again.

#1 plug is supposed to be the one in the front of the dist, just to the driver's side of straight ahead.
Find the #1 compression stroke again, the same way you did the first time, which is the right way. Then turn the oil pump drive rod so that it points from right rear to left front about 30º from straight front to rear. Hold the dist above it hole in the position it goes in, with the rotor pointing about 15° forward of straight to the left. Drop it in. It should engage the rod, and slide all the way down. It should be close enough to start right up like that. If it doesn't, check to make sure it's producing sparks.
