What Causes Grey Smoke?

I was close to WOT, and I was told that I had grey smoke coming from my exhuast, what causes this?

Sounds like you are running just a little on the rich side...

Thanks Vader, just recently I have come to realize this and am trying to fix it. The only thing I have been fooling with right now is the idle mixture trying to lean it out. But I was told to buy new rods and jets to go leaner, but I just bought a reman. Edelbrock carburetor, shouldn't it already be right where I need it, I mean why would they make it run richer than normal. Also I have a 160* stat which I know isn't helping, but my car runs about 170-180. Is there anything else I can check or change to go leaner. My emissions test on the idle tests definately indicates a rich scenario, my readings were thru the roof.

After making sure all carb vacuum lines are good and where they are supposed to be you might check for a code 15 bad CTS.

If your CTS was bad and your engine thought it was cold all the time your fuel mixture would constantly be enriched. 10 bucks.

A puff of black/grey smoke isn't necessarily a bad thing when you nail it, i'd rather have a rich transition than lean (and in fact that is how my 85 was set-up)
But if you're blowing agrey haze at WOT you are definitely way fat and wil gain a lot by leaning everything out. There is no reason to think an out of the box edelbrock carb should be dialed in from jumpstreet. Unfortuneatly i don't know much about the carter/edel. carbs so i can't really help you there.

When I did my quadrajet I just leaned the motor out till it started running rough and then I turned the screw back a bit so it would smooth out. I found this is the easiest way to do things. My car ran like a champ!
