Replaced pick up coil....need help timing motor

Hey guys,

Well I was having a problem with my camaro... it was cranking but not starting....after replacing a few parts and posting a few times with no correct answer i was able to research it on here and find out that the pick up coil was the problem...so I went ahead a replaced the pick up coil. I had printed some directions that I found on a previous post and followed them as best i could...well after getting the new pick up coil in..and re-installing the distributor using the marks i made for alignment...the car starts...sometimes..but runs real rough......and wont stay running for more then a bout 20 seconds....i know i probably messed up the timing by not inserting the distributor in correctly. I checked all the wires..(i labeled them as i took them off so i know they are in the right spots...)

bascially what i need to know is... how do i time the motor or fix this problem now that the car has been cranked with the distributor in wrong....

ive never done timing on a car..so any detailed help would be appreciated...

Im pretty sure i have access to a timing light...

thanks in advance

you need to get no.1 piston tdc. remove plug rotate engin put your finger over hole and feel for pressure or if you can look in hole with light to see if piston is up. then check if timing mark on pully is at zero. pull dist cap and see where rotor is pointing. rotate distributer till rotor points at no.1 plug. then set timing.

sorry, you can rotate the engin with the key but first disconnect coil wire so engin doesnt start. if your by yourself use a socket on the main pully center bolt should be 5/8 and rotate it. bit of a pain but you can also check no.1 piston while infront. quick tip! check timing mark on pully when set on zero. look at rotor it should be at either plug no.1 or no.6 if its only off a little you can adjust it from there. one rotation of timing mark at zero puts firing at no.1 then one more rotation puts it at n0.6.
