Verdict is in on my junk driver seat
Well, as I and others suspected, the seatback on my driver seat is bent. Theres a reinforcement area (if you want to call it that... they could have done a much better job) that runs from right to left across the back of the seat, right where the cloth dips toward the seat and moves away about 2/3 way up the seatback from the bottom on the front side where the factoy velcros the cloth to the foam. Its not only bent there, but the metal is torn about 1/4 of the way through the 'reinforcement' area...
Now what? I'd hate to get another supposedly good seatback, because most of those come from junkyards and I have a pretty good idea this started from a wreck I was in years ago. My dad says he tried to get that stuff from the dealer for his car (86 as well) a couple years ago, and apparently after 2 years youve pretty much screwed the pooch. So does anyone know if these things are available or not? I need the whole thing, its sort of a one piece deal anyways, its foam thats injected over the metal in the factory...

I put some 300ZX seats in my 89RS convt. I had to do some fabrication for the brackets but they are SOOO much better than the ****ty stock 3rd gen seats. I'd look to spend the money on good aftermarket seats. Your car will be so much more enjoyable.
If not look for some 4th gen seats.

Or, you can check out other GM cars for seats. Cars like the Pontiac 6000, Celebrity, Olds Ciera, etc, used seats with the same bolt-pattern as our F-bodies. You'll probably have to change the metal rails between the seat & floor, but that's it! I found my original seats (turned out they were Trans Am seats, didn't know that) in a Pontiac 6000 S/E Station Wagon! The seats bolted onto my f-body rails, and I had to switch the "tilt" mechanism over (since the 'wagon was a 4-door, the seats didn't bend forward), but what a deal! All the f-body seats I looked at were worse than my ripped-up originals.
Beretta's & Corsicas & Grand Prix's -might- work. They don't have the same seat rails... their seat rails "roll" into brackets on the floor. I think, tho, if you removed the rollers from underneath the seats, they might have the same bolt pattern. I'm not sure, I never had to check into those cars.

Well Im getting it fixed...
I got real lucky and found a driver seat out of a car that hadnt been wrecked and showed little wear... its even the same color and year as my seat, imagine that. It has a ripped cover in the same place as mine, so Im getting mine repaired and put on the junkyard seat, which is then going in my car. Sure hope this is a permanent solution.
