How do you adjust timing and how does it affect performance?

Yeah, I'm a newbie you can tell. Can anyone tell me about timing change, post a diagram, or something? Any info is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Here is something I have always wondered..Does it matter where on the #1 wire you hook up the timing light? Meaning, can i hook up the pickup right near the distributor versus right next to the plug? Yes, i am tired of melting my pickup on my headers.

It shouldn't matter where you connect your pick-up. I connect mine at the distributor.
