where to line up timing marks

where to line up timing marks
hey how am i suppose to line up the timing marks on a 92 350. the crank gear a 12 and cam at 12 or cam at 6 my book wasn't very clear on that thanks

Both dot to dot (cam gear at 6, crank at 12) and both straight up (12 o'clock) represent TDC for the #1 piston. Just various stages, considering each piston hits #1 twice per combustion cycle (compression, exhaust). Both straight up represents #1 compression, which is the #1 firing. Dot to dot means it's (the #1 piston) is on the exhaust stage.
Either way you do it, there's no "wrong way", IF you run the rotor and wires correctly. Run it both gears straight up and set the rotor to point for the #1 cylinder. Go dot to dot and make the rotor fire on the #6 cylinder. Either way, just ensure that the proper firing order is followed around.
