stock roller lifter set-up on old block?

What would stop me from using a newer roller lifter set-up (with spider in lifter valley) on an older block. I realize that there are no bosses for the bolts but why not tap the holes or fab standoffs if height is an issue? If anyone could shed some light I would like to know my options. Factory roller set-up has a great price.

Thanks
