305 HO (L69) owners, who's installed a cam & and was it worth it?

I'm considering changing the cam once I get this thing running properly again. I was wondering what's the best cam for a stock block and does the PROM have to be changed? since this motor already has a better cam than the regular 305,is there much benifit to changing the cam in this engine?

I've installed a number of cams in the L69s. They respond well to cam and intake changes. I've run as large as a 216/228 Crane in the 305 with the computer. However, my favorite cam installed was a 205/215 112 Lunati. I think the new Comp 4x4 (231-2) with 206/214 on a 111 would run even better. The 210/218 Comp would be about as large as I personally would want to run in the computer controlled 305. Add that and an Edelbrock 3701,, and it will really wake up the L69. Get HP book number 014 - by Doug Roes "Rochester Carbs" to help you tune it in for the cam and intake swap.

thanx BadSS, just the tech info I was looking for!! how much should it cost if I were to have the cam installed at a shop? (the engine is under warranty,I'm not sure I want to screw with it myself) an intake would be a great idea,I've seen the inside of that intake...yuck. is the edelbrock 3701 a computer controled carb?

sorry, I must be getting tired, that 3701 is an intake manifold I gather. what would a cam/intake combo like this do to economy? I suppose polished heads would help too ,but, that would be pilfering too much money from the 5.7L swap funds.....unless they would work on a 5.7 too..hmm

Heads are totally different (not really, but you wouldn't want to use them anyways, so remove that idea before it starts!). Some people like the CC262 in the 305, but IMO it is too big for that size, especially if you want to kep the computer and e-check happy.

Best mods to my 305 were: Exhaust... the whole thing, intake manifold (Edelbrock and Weiland are the best), torque converter (about 3000 stall), and a 350 swap!

Heads should not be swapped. Get a cam that works in your 305 and another one that works in your 350... don't try to get one that works OK in either. Porting your 305 heads will help, along with a cam, but short of a power adder, you won't be too fast. Keep the q-jet too!

1984 z28 w/ a 357 cu in. monster engine which is looking like the posterchild for Edelbrock with the exception of the Holley 750vac... all the suspension stuff... 9-bolt posi disk is in...
