broken vent controls? only defrosts vents work somtimes..?

this is weird, lately I've noticed that no matter what mode my vents are set to, all the air blows out from the defrost vents, then other times it all goes back to normal and works fine!! WTF!? a strange voo-doo curse or a common f-body problem?

Most probable cause is the vacuum switch "manifold" on the back of that switch... do you hear a vacuum leak at all? Even if not, it can still do it. An easy way to fix this (so I've heard) is to pull that manifold off the back of the switch and swab the insides of each of those tubes with vaseline. Or if it's wose than that, you may have to "custom fit" the manifold back on there like I did. Either way, you DON'T want to have to replace that manifold, but shouldn't have to anyways... The vacuum manifold I'm speaking of is on the backside of the A/C control head, so you'll have to get to it by removing the control head (not completely), or remove your stereo and get to it from there. The manifold is held to the switch by 2 of those "press-on" lock washers, and can just be pried off. Just put a rag or something down in there first, cuz if you loose 'em...

Kam is 100% correct. I just had my 92 Camaro unit go bad. Turns out the 5 vacuum port manifold was loose. NAPA wanted $11 for a new one but I stopped by my A/C guy. He did not have the correct one but gave me a similar one. I took the center pin (holds the whole unit together) out of the one he gave me and installed it in mine. She tightened up nicely and works perfect. Be warned, that pin in the center is a
b i t c h to get out! I had to cut the guts away from the pin on the new unit to get it out without damaging it.
