setting timing
Hi,
I have a question about how to set the timing through the 165 ecm. Basically I want to confirm is this is the right way to do it. It is an 88 Iroc with a 165 and a $6e bin. I am just preparing for when I will be putting in a GM ZZ383.
Am I correct in saying this is how to set the timing, please be aware I have never set the timing before on any vehicle but I have read a lot of information on this board and other sources.
1) set the base timing to 6 or 8 degrees
2) with the car running and logging through the ALDL for knocks increase the timing until a knock is detected, when a knock is detected then back off the timing a bit. I would then do this through the RPM range 1000-6000 with 500rpm intervals
3) Fill in any blanks on the timing table averaging the timing between the two points
4) put a load on the engine by driving it and looking for knocks, if a knock is detected then lower the timing in that area.
