Which used block?
Which used block?
I have a 305 w/145,000 miles. Im going to be needing a new one soon, even though this on is still running like a bat out of hell. It's a 305tbi w/5spd. I want to keep the tbi for money reasons. I want to buy a used 350 and rebuild it. My question is, is it worth it to get a LT1 or LS1 block if I can. I want to reuse most of the inners. With a new cam and heads. Is their any advantage to one short block as opposed to another? Thanks for the help, and please no discussion on tbi/tpi/carb.
Very little if anything from the LS1 will work with your 305 parts.
The LT1 stuff could be made to work (but not without spending more money than you are probably prepared for).
Your best bet is to use a pre-LT1 350 block. Shouldn't be too hard to find one. There were several million made beginning in 1967.
If you go this way, you probably would want at least a 1987 or later version so you could have the one-piece rear main seal and roller cam provisions, as well as the passenger side dip stick.
