smoke on startup.

I know this question has been asked before, and I also know that it's more than likely valve seals, but...is it something that can happen with extremeley low mileage. My IROC just turned 8k on the odometer Saturday. However, at startup when cold, the car has smoked since I have owned it. I bought the car last year with 6300 miles. What is involved in getting this to stop? Will it hurt anything to leave it alone? Thanks

Well its kind of hard to say when it starts. Yes it could happen with that number of low miles on it. Do I think it would happen, no but it could. It will not cause any major harm to let it go, just check your oil on a regular basis. Eventually it will eat oil all the time and at that point, I would defently have them fixed.

It looks like 8000 miles, not 1008000. Very clean looking car, Scott. Did you put a 350 in there? Your window sticker says 305 350s, iirc, were not offered with t-tops.

Valve seals don't wear people.... they dry up. If the car is an original low miler than of course it's the valve seals. From lack of use they would have dried up. Sometimes not driving a car and letting it sit is worse than driving the hell outta it.

I had a few other problems with seals drying up when I bought the car. The rear seal on the tranny was also shot and was leaking tranny fluid, I had corrosion on the contacts of 2 relays under the hood and the EGR dried up and needed replacing. Not driving a car "IS" harder on the car than driving it.

Also, the car is an original 350. There were a lot of 350 with TTops made in 87. From 90 on, it will be hard to find 'em. When looking at the window sticker, you saw the Standard Items for the Z28 listed the 305. If you look at the option list underneath, it lists B2L, 5.7 liter TPI V8 for $1045. Down the page further, it lists 1SC - IROC option package 3. Don't forget that in 87, the IROC was an option on the Z28. Look at the pictures again and you will agree that the car has only 6300 when bought.
