My future engine build....

Ok, I will be purchasing a 355, soon, yes a short block for around $700...

355
CR 9.5-10
Fully Ported and Polished LB9 Heads upgraded exhaust valve to 1.6
Edit: Forgot i'll be having 1.6 rockers also
Crane Cams Powermax Cam, 278/290 .467"/.494"
LT1 Intake conversion

here’s what desktop dyno had to say about the setup, however, I’m only hoping for 30HP less then what it has to offer at the crank.

I just want 300RWHP

I figure I can have this setup built for around $1900, then a rebuilt 700-r4 for around, $600. Then a nice rebuilt rear end for somewhere in the neighborhood of, $200.

Today was the regional contest of the work program I am in, and out of 32 high school seniors in my area, I placed first in automotive technician. I won a cash prize of $500, so I got money now. But I have this really cool gold medallion.

And I have two interviews tomorrow for apprenticeships; I have one for AAA Automotive, and Ferran Automotive, which specializes in GM Cars.

But tell me what you think of my setup,

Shane

scarey to think there's 31 people know less than you about cars, that are going to school for it. what happened to the 1200 dollar a week income from jobs, along wit hthe 92K net worth you said you had?

i spend my money wisely. Outta 1200 a week i have, i only get in my pocket around 400 a week.

These new jobs are to fulfil my need, to be a mechanic, i want to be a mechanic, and these jobs will bring me there.

and the offer is stillup, anyone dont think i'm worth that much, bet all you got against me.

that setup will be fine, as long as you can tune it.

I hope to be able to tune it, i will buy the computer stuff before i finish the build.

But if i get lazy a friend of mine, has a connector so he can tune while the car is running and stuff, like the car runs off his laptop, and when he gets it running great he saves that prom and then burns it to the one for the car.

I'm just hoping to put 300RWHp down to the pavement, thatt way, this old thirdgen, has something to back up its looks.

with as much bullsh*t as you sling around the boards, i would just build it, not say anything about it, take pictures and get real dyno graphs/track times, then post it. and maybe post something that proves it's your car.

i have stuff to prove its my real car! the damn title is in my freggin name for christ sake.

This isn't ****, my car is starting to burn oil, so the heads are gonna be ported and polished and then given a full valve job very soon.

Then i'll be rebuilding the tranny, it dont really need it, but i want to get it out of the way.

Then will come a nice rear end, mine is clunking, and someone said its becuase of the smaller gear, is moving, and when throttle is applied it moves.

Then i'll be getting the 355 short block, bolt on those heads with the same valves and replace the other internals, pushrods, and that stuff.

Somewhere in there, wherever its easiest, i'll be rebuilding the front suspension....

I think i have a nice plan for the next year or so...

Why leave the small valves in the heads? Also, I think that you should, really, really, re-evaluate your choices in rear end and trans. I doubt that a 600 dollar 700r4 is going to take too much beating from an engine like that. I think that one may be enough to kill a stock one. If you find a 200 dollar rebuilt rear, either the man selling it is stupid or a liar. There is more than 200 dollars involved in decent gears and bolts.

I say go for it, just make sure you do it right. I put in a 355 and before I got it running perfect, the tranny went. Then I got the tranny rebuilt, and the rear end started "growling" on turns. I put a new rearend on it, and noticed the suspension clunking on bumps. I'm now almost finished with the suspension and am planning a rebuild on the motor. It's a ongoing process that never ends.

well the 700-r4 will be rebuilt by a good friend of mine, the $600 includes all new gears, rings, pretyt much everything except the case bryan said.

Then the rear end, the local yards, if any of you recal are owned by a buddy of mine. so a 9" he said would only be $100, and that i could mount it, just by cutting the mounts of my current 9 bolt. and welding them to the 9". He said it should bolt right up and everything....

But iunno, what about offsets and whatnot.

well the "small" valves as you call them i am choosing to use, are great for my RPM range. I want torque in 2500-5500 RPM range and those vlaves are decent for it, 1.94 intake and 1.6 exhaust will do fine, i only noticed 5 hp on desktop dyno when using 2.2 intake valves.

let me tell ya how accurate that desktop dyno is too!

no way in hell you will get a 9" to fit under your car for $200. i don't care how many buddies you have.

i didn't think so, i thought you needed the custom housing. But i'll just find a nice 4th gen rear end or a decent 9 bolt, i like the 9 bolts.... Or just replace the gears in mine.

but that'll still around $200

Here, you can get a rear end done for less than $200.

i know but 9 bolts are also strogner then 10 bolts. 9 bolts are 7.75 inches while 10 bolts are 7.5". which is stronger??? the 9 bolt.

i just know i need a newer rear end, and i think a set of gears might do be some good. I've seen them for $300, some places, thats expensive, but its what ya gotta pay tho right?

I am only expecting to put down 300RWHP. And thats it. if i get more then more power to the ground, if i get what i wanted then i reached my goal.

Thats true, those 1.94 valves would be perfect. However, if I remember correctly, the 305 heads recieved 1.84 I think. Istill dont think that I would trust a 600 dollar 700R4, but thats ok. If it were my car, I would lose the 9 bolt that is so expensive to buy parts for, and get me a later 10 bolt. Get one that is already set up with a posi from a later thirdgen. These come with 28spline axles. Then you can buy some aftermarket axles for a couple hundred and have a decent rear.

1.84 eh..... i giotta chekc on that but i''m almost positive they have 1.94. or atleasts can be made to have 1.94.

Its really not a $600 rebuild, its a $1.2k rebuild for cheaper. My buddy bryan normally charges an arm and a leg, but i keep his kid out of trouble and i fix their computers all the time so he rewards me with deals like this.

The rear end i'm still very undecided on. 9 biolts are stronger yet nobody has heard of them, and parts are expensive, i might as well sell my left nut for one of those gear kits.

A 4th gen 10bolt would be a nice upgrade and gears are half the price. But i would have to upgrade to 4th gen rear wheels and i love the stock ws6 wheels i have. I have come to love those things i just keep them polished. The stockers are awesome i just wish they were lighter.

I'll just have to keep doing my research.

His posts used to be funny...now they are just annoying and his stories keep getting bigger and Bigger and BIgger and BIGger and BIGGer and BIGGEr and BIGGER!!!! Now he just flat out lies like he doesn't care anymore cuz everyones got his number. When will this crap ever end? First his car was down for a few weeks and then suddenly he's back on tgo with this killer story about his street race episode. Now its a 355 motor, he makes 1200 week (my ***), he's in school full time taking automotive classes and placing top in his class even though he cant figure out why his door is frozen shut after he got it wet in the cold, works two jobs, spends his free(?) time at the movies, has several girlfriends and spends several hours a day here and knows all these important people that will help him get stuff really cheap, has six stepdads and a stepmom who wont let him work on his car, and travels between fla and missouri when the need arises...

By the way...congrats on your school accomplishment Shane. Won't be long and you'll be the next GM CEO. :lala:

Those desktop dyno numbers seem a bit high. What did you put in for your air induction system?

Check with these guys for parts for your 9 bolt they have very good pricing on gears and rebuild kits if they still have them.

I can remember a couple posts where he couldnt figure out why a burnt bulb would cause his blinker not to work ......please lord help us if this is the future of our automotive techs.....

The only way I can possibly imagine Shane placing AT ALL would be if he had a laptop with access to the thirdgen boards right next to him. And even then, he'd still have trouble.

I really hope that by saying he got first, he means that he got dead last.. not because I think he's annoying, but I don't want him anywhere near my car when I take it to the shop because it's not worth my time to fix on my own.

well i've already shown pictures of vehicle registration on these boards why do i need todo it again? My mother has the pink slip in the safe cause we all know how good i am with keeping important papers.

At that particular moment, i was actually, hmmm i forgot.... well i was doing something where it felt more relaxing to lay on the car. I'm actually 6'1 so i'm not short.

But the car was given to me by my step-father, and my cardomain site has pics of it while it was in that state.

Today i had 3 interviews. One offered me $8/hour, and he called me a gofer, the person who gets him things. Another offered $7.50/hour, and he said he'd start me off doing oil changes, spark plugs, ignition, the simple things. The other place said, we'll pay you, $200 a week, just come in when we ned ya to, i said as long as its before 6Pm i can. This isn't much pay for me, but its all for a learning experience. That way i can gain knowledge, and get paid good for mechanical work.

But if ya ned proof, i havn't taken too many pics of the car lately, too busy. But now i need to get to one of my jobs. So talk to ya'll later.

Shane

Y'know, I'd like to see the paperwork for that alleged #1 placement. Probably a SR. after-school adult class on into to the automobile.

i just figured out who Shane really is...

any one remember that show "Different Strokes"?

the little red hair kid named "Sam"..

Shane is same grown up.. and sadly still the read headed step child that no one likes..

can we ban him? i mean he wastes more bandwidth than anyone. everyone calls him out and catches him on these BS stories, and he never has an excuse or reason why he told it. he goes from board to board telling stories, then has to change boards because he knows too many people will call on him.

can we start an online petition that he can only post AFTER a mod has looked at what he is going to say? if not lets just say
