help with evrything under the hood
ok i bought this 85 trans am with a fresh rebuilt motor. have had problem after proble with it but have finally got it on the road..replaced the alt. , replaced the fuel pump, only to find out the gasket in the carb were shot to hell went to rebuild stock qjet to find that who ever rebuilt it before me forgot to install some much needed parts and gaskets and o rings inside so i scraped the qjet and went to a edelbrock 600 . Now runs pretty damn good....but its a mess under the hood the ac was riped out by what looks like a bunch of 10 year old kids knawing at it with there teeth.. wires every where broken sensors just hanging there..still dont know what to do with the qjet connectors...i can take pics and email them to anyone that can lend a hand...i need to know what i can do with the wiring and vacum lines cause im sure they arnt all in the right places. What can i do with the distributor, coil, and everythnig with that? Dont know where to satart but willing to try anything and everything.
thanks guys,
Bill

Man, that looks nasty. Decide now if you want to keep the CCC controls (computer) or not. By looking at the nice shiney carb, I'd guess the computer isn't a concern?
It'll take a bunch time and patience to figure that wiring out, but not impossible.....
My computer and ECM harness are hanging from my garage wall on a pegboard hook....
But it ran great with the 305HO in it.....and I still had the
CC Q-jet and 50 state legal!!
The 305's on a stand waiting...

Haha...
first thing I would be buying is wire looms, then bring in all the broken sensors while you're there, and be like "I need new ones of... -throw sensors on table-... these...
".
That is unless you're ditching the computer. Then just start pulling out all of those sensors and weed through the wires you dont need then lol.
I guess if it were me, it would be a lot simpler for me to just rebuild the q-jet myself, and then plop it back on so I wouldnt have to mess with buying a new distributor, and figuring out which wires I need to pull, then take out the ECM, then I dont know if the ECM sends a signal to the gauges to tell you the tach signal, or the speed... so that might be a mess all in itself.
So if it were ME... rebuild the Q-Jet the right way. Replace sensors, and get wire looms... lots, and lots of wire looms lol.

Hes got the correct distributor. I see the vacuum canister poking out of its side. No issues there. Just a simple tach and power wire.
Go ahead and send me some pictures if you want. We'll see what can't be done.

#1 is a vacuum reservior. You need that to operate your a/c-heater-defrost controls.
#2 looks like a MAP (manifold air press) sensor. There should be a vacuum line running from it to the intake manifild. You'll need that if you want the computer to know how much load is on the eng.

vacuum res..what does it run from casue right now vac line is just hanging there...
map sensor (#3) ? its not hooked up to anything. The only line coming from the manifold is in the 2nd pictue....What is that?
1st pic what are #1 and #2?
thanks...

thanks,
bill

After seeing the last pic, I agree, that is the MAP sensor next to the dipstick. Not sure what that is on the far left side (#3 in next to last photo). Is that a vacuum line coming off the bottom??
Item #1 in that same pic is the ESC (elec spark control) module. On later years, it was replaced by some circuitry on the Memcal.
Item #2 is a relay.
On my car I have 3 identical relays in that same area. Fuel pump, MAF power and MAF burn-off. Since your car has no MAF (mass air flow), I'm assuming that is the fuel pump relay.
The vacuum reservoir connects to intake manifold vacuum via the large line. (If you're not going to use the computer, the vacuum reservoir could connect where the MAP sensor is connected) The small line should be going to the inside of the car. The vacuum provides the muscle to control where the air comes out (defroster, heater, A/C vents, etc). If vacuum is lost, air should come out the defroster vents only. This is its' default mode. For safety reasons you want the windshield clear.
