resetting computer

about 3 months ago i added a edelbrock open air element to my 89 TBI camaro. I was told to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes so the car can reprogram itself so it has the right air/fuel mixture. however, other people have said on this website that you have to leave it disconnected for 15 minutes... who is right? i have noticed that i have been getting worse gas milage since then

In my experiance, disconnect it for about 10 mins. THEN, start up, and drive like grandma for about 10 miles. If you give it full gun from the start, the computer thinks that more-more-more is what you want, and the gas miledge will suffer. If you do as I have tried, gas miledge stays where it should, and your performance will be there too.

uhhh, no, i would be willing to bet a $ that your problem has nothing to do with improper computer resetting procedure (btw, even a few seconds w/o power is usually enough, a few minutes is just to be safe, 15 minutes is absurd.)
Also, your gas mileage is not significantly affected by your new air cleaner either.

I've just eliminated 2 possible causes of your problem, now you get to check the rest of your car over to figure it out.

This is just silly. Your computer 'learns' it's fueling based on the load/rpm/temp/etc that it is operating at, heavy emphasis on the first 2. You can't make your computer learn go-go-go, all your computer learns is how much correction it needs to make to the programmed fuel tables at a given load/rpm. Regardless of how you drive you cannot make the computer learn to give too much fuel, it will only give as mnuch fuel as is needed to maintain 14.7:1 AFR as read by the O2 sensor. Also important to note is that learning is a constant process, so even if you jumped in teh car and drove 300 miles in 2 hours, when you stopped to get gas (apart from being astounded at 20+mpg @ 150mph) your computer would sit there and learn the idle as you pumped. And if you drove another 300 miles, had the muffler fall off halfway and thus your VE had changed thus the fuel you needed at idle changed, guess what, within seconds your computer woul learn the new idle fueling while you pumped.

The point is, bad gas mileage CANNOT be blamed on the way you drove for the first ten minutes after a reset. Some external factor is involved. The computer will not purposely run you rich in closed loop.

I believe 30 seconds with ur batt disconnected is enought time to reset your computer.
