stupid ? about trunk latch

ok this mabye be a completly stupid ? but here it goes wat exactly does the latch pulldown thing do? i have one but it doesnt work the cable snapped in it

pretty much what it says, it pulls the hatch closed after it latches

so it just pulls it down, but how does it know when to stop? and does it rise up?

Yes and yes. On mine, in warm weather, when I pop the hatch from inside, it will pop, and then the latch will rise up, pushing the hatch open a bit, and then the struts will open it up the rest of the way. And then when I go to close it, all I have to do is lightly set it down so it latches, and then the motor will pull it down the rest of the way. Not sure how it knows to stop. My guess is that it stops when it hits the limit of it's travel.
