Got it started,... sort of,..... :(

hey guys, I want to give a great big appreciative slap on the back of the fella that put the cylinder diagram on my last post string. Turns out, everything was fine, I simply had been given the information inverted,... so, I swapped everything around,.. and VVVRROROOOMMMM!!! then,.. SPUT< SPUT<>> UCAGHHHH>........

so, instead of started plug number one right after the ignition wire hookup, you start it after the first bolt in the cap!? amazing. anyway, car starts,.. and runs INCREDIBLY well,... but only as long as I keep my foot on the gas pedal. The check engine light keeps flickering, and wont go off, and this horrid smoke is coming from somewhere under the engine and burns my eyes,... same stuff coming out of the tailpipe. I am guessing I am getting too much of something in the system, but I dont know what, and I cant tell what color the smoke is. looks light though, I dont think it is oil.

once my foot eases off of the gas, the engine starts to sputter and choke, then dies. what is going on with it now??

originally, here is what happened: The fuel guage reads wrong to start with. I only take the car out maybe once or twice a week, sometimes just start it and let it run while I am working out there. I was running to the hardware store oneday, (1 block away) and the car started cutting out on me, like it was out of gas or something, so I barely made it to a gas station and filled it up, but it kept doing it, so I had it limp home and put it in the garage. My friend and I changed the fuel filter, and man was that thing nasty,.. then I decided since it needed it anyway, to go ahead and change the cap/rotor/wires/plugs,... so I did all of that, and when I tried to start it, it did what it is doing now, only running while I depress the gas pedal. after that I played around with the wires, with a WRONG diagram and got them all mixed up, which is what brought me here in the first place. Well, now I have them all back where they go, and I am back to the orignal problem of,.. the car wont idle or start without flooring the gas pedal. any ideas???

Thanks,

Thomas

could be a cracked head or block if the smoke is light colored-if its white, thats the problem.

Fuel system contamination... dirt in the injectors, probably, combined with gas that might be inflammable or saturated with water from its age.

Squirt some atarting fluid in it, or pour a little of some known good gas in the intake; if it starts up and runs good for a few seconds, then when what you've poured in is used up, goes back to running like hammered dog plop, you'll know its a fuel problem.

I've gotta agree with RB83L69, sounds like what my 83 did after I got it started (set for about a year while I did mods). The smell and smoke were horrific, almost got me divorced! Thankfully the tank was near empty, I just kept putting good gas in it and finally it cleared up. No smoke or smell and it ran correctly.

Could it be oil smoke? I got an engine once that had dip stick holes on both sides and I forgot to plug one of them. It made an awful mess and I had smoke everywhere. I looked around all day before I finally figured it out.

well,

I went out this morning on my way to work and stopped to give it a crank, and VVRROOMMM! ran, and ran well, and ran under its own power. sounded fine. I dont know if it will still be so happy this evening when I get home to play with it but for now it seems to have corrected itself. Maybe it was just alot of gas/atarter fluid/debris from sitting and cranking, and it just needed time to let everything settle....??

Thanks alot guys,

Thomas
