84 Z28 question
84 Z28 question
I bought a 84 Z28 with a 305 4/barrel automatic for my son and I to fix up for his first car .My questions is can I still strip off the air pump (not even hooked up anyways) ,emission components(bad shape) , plug off the EGR on the intake and just run vac for just what the motor needs like "back in the day"?
By back in the day I mean the last 305 I worked on was from a 79 gutless to 79 gutless motor swap and what I did then was strip off the AC stuff along with the emisssions hoses and what not and I plugged off the egr hole at the intake .I just ran what vacuum we needed but I`m not sure I can do that with this car and I`d like to find out before we begin.Ya know like am I going to have some sort of oxygen sensor or ECM conflicts , along that line. Any help or suggestions would be great , the snow is meltin and I`m ready to wrench.

I did that, its not hard. Works just fine. One thing to remember though, is that if you take off the AIR pump bracket, you need to put a washer or something where the bracket was on the alternator bolt. It has to be the same thickness as the bracket was. If you don't, they wont line up right, and it will throw belts all over the place. Ask me how I know...

if you want an old school approach you would have to ditch the CC carb and dizzie and use non-cc ones. if what you have works then it's not worth the hassle. i'd just leave the air pump on there but change the belt routing so it doesn't spin it, if you're unsure of what you're doing.
