crankcase vent?
does anyone know what the cone shaped piece with a hose nipple on it is for?
This is next to the distributor and oil pressure line.I took it off and there is a 1" hole goes right down to oil pan.
this is on a "65" vette 327

It is for the PCV valve.
Earlier cars used a "road draft" tube, largely ineffective, that went into the block there and just sort of hung down to the bottom of the car, where there's low pressure. Starting right about in 65, they started putting a PCV valve that went in line; there was a large hose that went to the valve, and a 3/8" hose that went to the vacuum port at the base of the carb.
You need the PCV valve for a 65-66 sort of car, doesn't have to be a "from a Vette", nobody cares about that anyway. There was originally a little bracket to hold the PCV valve itself that mounted IIRC to the rear intake side valve cover bolt. Then, you need some source of replacement clean air to the crankcase; originally, those cars used an oil filler tube in the front of the intake, and a push-in vented oil cap, that always spewed oil all over the outside of the motor like that sort of thing always does. Or, you could jsut plug all that stuff off, and put a normal modern effective PCV system in the valve covers. That's what I'd do.

zdrag,
I don't believe that RB had the impression that you were being "snooty". That's just his matter-of-fact style.
Sometimes, parts for the Y-Cars are a bit different, and sometimes they are significantly different, but most times they are not. I think that RB may have simply been pointing out that you didn't need to shop specifically for a PCV for a Corvette. Those early systems were really rather generic.
It was a good idea to add the information about the application, just in case. Relative to that, remember that this IS a forum for ThirdGen F-Cars.

Well, slap me for assuming. I didn't understand that this was going into a modded ThirdGen. Of course, now that the cat is out of the bag, you're going to be bugged for photos, details, etcetera.
I apologize for closing the thread.
I'm thinking the "later rocker cover and PCV" idea is the right course for your application, but we all know how much I can be trusted...
